Tijimbat Minyerri - Wet Season 2014

Our name, Teachabout, closely aligns with the word, tijimbat, a Kriol word from the Roper River region, which means 'teach your kids about everything'.

Teachabout has a unique approach to school holiday programs. Our programs are well thought-out and expansive with a strong focus on building relationships with the kids, their families and community members. They incorporate a wide variety of activities including art projects, science experiments, cultural knowledge, drama, ICT, music, dance and sport. English literacy, numeracy and problem-solving skills are integrated across these activities and also form the focus of specific sessions.

Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander visitors should be aware that this website may contain images or names of people who have since passed away.

Kevin: A Day of Debuts

It was a day of debuts on Wednesday - my first day on Teachabout program, Tom’s first delve into drama and Teachabout’s first ever health activity. The day began fantastically as the Teachabout Junior kids made their own shapes, colours and stories with some amazing play-dough thanks to Jesse’s mum’s secret recipe. Following Tuesday’s Northern Territory Day celebrations, the kids also created some pastel drawings of fireworks in the night sky.

The afternoon was a flurry of cutting, sticking, sewing, ironing and everything in between to prepare the t-shirts and body aprons for afternoon Teachabout. All the activity leaders banded together to get the first ever health activity up and running smoothly and all the hard work paid off! The body aprons were a great success and the Teachabout kids loved identifying the location of the organs and listening to Phoebe’s heart with Ngaree’s stethoscope was a real treat (thanks Ngaree!).

Tom introduced the group to charades and the excitement was apparent with yelling and screaming echoing across the oval. The involvement was great and the kids looked at different ways of using different parts of their body to express themselves.

The final part of rotation involved painting with glue, salt crystals and dye and the kids were able to explore mixing colours and textures. Things became a little crazy when all 38 kids came up to paint salt paintings or t-shirts but everything got done and everyone had a blast.

After a quick pack and dinner the activity leaders headed down to Robin and Trevor’s place for stories, songs and a stargaze around the campfire. Jesse and Tara’s impromptu rendition of Led Zeppelin’s Babe I'm Gonna Leave You stole the show and was a great way to end a great day.
